Unasked-For Advice For Writers About Money

written by novelist John Scalzi, reccomended to all writers out there by sci-fi writer and editor of Boing Boing, Cory Doctrow.

This is definitely something I think we all need to consider given the US financial situation as of late. That green shit we call money doesn't grow on trees after all.

i didn't see a section in there about ramen noodles.

how can you give financial advice to writers and completely skip ramen noodles?

it seems odd.

so it goes

i keep thinking i should add a section to Off Beat Pulp for various ways to be a starving writer. "how to make the most out of a potato" and such.

i think it's an idea whose time has come.

so it goes

I think that's a great idea but don't forget artists, art supplies are expensive.
Soon I'll have to resort to using ballpoint pens and copy paper for my drawings.

why do you think i stick with indian ink and a heavy-weight watercolor paper.

okay, so i'm obsessed with ink, but still... negative space black and white is relatively cheap.

sheesh, even my artistic tendencies are frugal.

so it goes

Ink is cheap but watercolour paper isn't.
I used ink for the first time in years yesterday:

I like Art Spectrum drawing inks, I still had a box of them under my bed from when I was at Uni.

My mum gave me a copy of the Starving Artist's Survival Guide yesterday. It doesn't have a lot of practical advice but it does have an excellent section on rejection letter paper crafts and a list of reasons to keep your head out of the oven.

That's really cool!

Boil 1 package generic noodles with a healthy shake or five of dehydrated onion and garlic.
Drain and add 1 can of tuna or chicken, 1 can of cream of mushroom soup, a half cup of mayonnaise, whatever seasonings you have left (cilantro, parsley, cumin, paprika, whatever), and, if you have it, some shredded cheese.
Stir it up, salt and pepper to taste.
eat for the next three days.
